The short answer: no, you do not strictly need a pegboard. There are workarounds using tape, printed grids, or ironing paper. But a real pegboard is cheaper than a pizza, lasts for years, and makes every project faster and neater, so we recommend starting with one.
Pegboards do one job: they hold every bead in a perfect grid while you build and iron. If you do not have one yet, here are the alternatives that actually work, and what each one costs you in time and frustration.
Pegboard-free methods
- Tape method: lay strips of masking tape sticky-side up, press beads onto the tape following a printed grid, then tape the whole thing to a board and iron. Popular for very large designs.
- Printed grid on paper: place beads directly on a printed 5 mm grid using a drop of glue or a tiny bit of wax to hold them. Slow but workable for small pieces.
- Ironing paper sandwich: arrange beads freehand between two sheets of ironing paper and press. Fine for tiny abstract shapes, hopeless for anything precise.
Why the board is still worth it
Every workaround above takes two to three times longer and fails on anything bigger than a keychain.
