The short answer: the standard square perler pegboard has 29 by 29 pegs, which is 841 positions. The large size has 58 by 58 pegs (3,364), and mini boards have their own smaller grids. Counts vary slightly by brand.
Knowing your peg count matters for two reasons: it tells you the maximum pattern size a board can hold, and it tells you how many beads a design needs. Patterns in our free library always state both, so you can check before you start.
Peg counts by board size
- Small square (29 by 29): 841 pegs. Fits most keychains, charms, and small art.
- Large square (58 by 58): 3,364 pegs, made of four connectable sections. Good for medium designs and portraits.
- Round and shaped boards: between 150 and 400 pegs depending on the shape.
- Mini boards: their own grids, usually around 50 by 50 for the large mini board, but the pegs are spaced for 2.6 mm beads.
