The short answer: a pegboard is a flat plastic tray with a grid of small pegs. You slide perler beads onto the pegs to build your design, then iron them right on the board. After fusing, the board peels away and you can reuse it for the next project.
The pegboard is the one tool you cannot skip with perler beads: it keeps every bead exactly where it belongs, in a perfect grid, while you place them and while you iron. Without one, beads roll everywhere and rows drift out of alignment.

Do you need a pegboard for every project?
Practically yes, but you can get creative: some people make tiny designs directly on ironing paper, or use tape over a printed grid. It works in a pinch but is slower and messier. A board costs a few dollars and lasts for years, so it is worth buying one even if you only craft occasionally.
