How to Make 3D Perler Bead Designs and Patterns

The short answer: design 3D perler like a paper model. Draw the shape as an unfolded net on grid paper, mark which edges join, iron each panel on one side only, and bend toward the un-ironed side. Start from simple shapes and the rest follows.

Every 3D bead build is a flat net folded into a shape. Once you can picture the net, you can design your own boxes, animals, and buildings instead of copying someone else’s.

The design rules that matter

  • Bend toward the un-ironed side: the soft side stretches, the melted side is brittle. Test on a scrap strip first.
  • Keep fold lines clear of decoration: a pattern that crosses a fold line will crack there.
  • Use even panel sizes: a 10 by 10 face and a 9 by 9 face meet crooked. Count the beads.
  • Plan seams on the inside: where two edges meet, overlap them by one bead row so the join is hidden.
  • Rounded shapes need more panels: a sphere is not one bent square, it is a ring of panels.

How to start designing

Draw a cube net on grid paper: four squares in a row, one on top, one on the bottom. That is the whole design. Then swap the squares for textured panels and try a pyramid: one square base and four triangles. Work through the shapes in our 3D patterns guide, and ready-made nets are in the pattern library. Beads, boards, and paper are in our shop.
