The short answer: no. A clothes steamer never gets hot enough to fuse 5 mm beads, and the moisture causes bigger problems: damp paper sticks to the beads and the melt comes out uneven. Use a dry iron on medium heat instead.
Fuse beads need about 130 C to soften and bond. A steamer sprays warm mist at the surface, which is a fraction of that temperature, and the paper soaks up the moisture instead of letting heat through.
What goes wrong with steam
- Too cool: the mist cannot raise the beads to melting temperature, no matter how long you steam.
- Wet paper: parchment and wax paper become sticky when damp, and beads will cling to the paper.
- Uneven melt: the center of the piece heats differently than the edges, leaving weak spots.
- Steam burns: a hand steamer near a child’s face is a burn risk, and the steam pressure scatters beads.
If you already tried it
Let the project dry completely, then iron it normally with a dry iron and fresh parchment paper. Beads that fused partway will finish bonding on the second pass. The full ironing guide walks through the correct method, and parchment, boards, and beads are in our shop.
