The short answer: most over-melted pieces can be saved. Reheat gently to relax bubbles and warps, press flat while cooling, and trim plastic drips with scissors. Only badly burned beads are beyond saving.
Over-melting happens fast: a ten-second pause in one spot is enough to turn a crisp pattern into a glossy blob. The good news is that plastic, unlike paper, can be reshaped while warm.
The rescue steps
- Relax bubbles: cover with fresh parchment and iron on low-medium heat for a few seconds. Bubbles and craters flatten out.
- Press flat: while warm, place under a heavy book on a flat surface and leave until cool.
- Trim drips: once cool, cut melted edges and drips with scissors. The cut edge looks fine on most designs.
- Hide the damage: for still-ugly spots, glue a small decoration on top, or cut the piece down to a smaller shape that avoids the damaged area.
When to start over
If the piece is burned brown, has smoke marks, or the beads melted into a flat sheet with no pattern left, restart. That takes a fresh set of beads, not more ironing. Next time, iron with a timer in mind: ten seconds per area, then flip. Full guidance in our ironing guide.
