The short answer: 3D jewelry works best in small sizes: a 6 by 6 cube, a mini heart, or a tiny ball. Build them with mini beads so they stay light, iron both sides, and attach findings with jump rings.
Flat bead jewelry is easier to make, but 3D pieces catch the eye. The secret is keeping everything small and light, because a heavy earring is an uncomfortable earring.
Three starter pieces
- Cube earrings: a 5 by 5 cube, ironed fully on both sides, with a jump ring through a top bead.
- Mini heart pendant: two small heart panels plus a thin filler band, or just a flat heart for the first try.
- Ball bead: a small disc pressed into a ball over a spoon while warm, with a hole left at the top for the chain.
- Star pendant: two tiny star panels glued back to back.
Attachment and care
- Use jump rings with pliers to attach hooks, chains, and clasps. No glue needed.
- Leave a bead hole open at the top of the piece for the jump ring.
- Iron both sides completely so edges do not catch on clothes.
- Store pieces flat, away from heat, and keep them dry.
