The short answer: a perler pattern is pixel art on graph paper. Every square is one bead. Pick a size, fill in the squares, limit yourself to six or seven colors, and you have a pattern ready to build.

Step by step
- Pick a size: 10 by 10 for keychains, 29 by 29 for one full board, bigger for wall art.
- Draw the outline first, then fill the inside with colors.
- Limit colors to six or seven. More colors mean more bead jars to buy and more sorting.
- Use darker colors for outlines and shading, lighter colors for highlights.
- Count the beads per color, then check your stash before buying anything.
- Build the pattern on the pegboard and adjust while it is still loose.
