The short answer: most children can start placing beads around age five or six, with an adult handling the iron. Some four-year-olds manage the beading fine; some seven-year-olds do not. Watch the child, not the calendar.
The two skills are completely different: placing beads needs fine motor control and patience, while ironing needs judgment and safety awareness. Kids develop those at different speeds.
Age guide
- Under four: beads stay out of reach. Too much choking risk for any beading.
- Four to six: beading with close supervision. Use large boards and simple patterns, count beads after.
- Seven to nine: most can build alone with adult nearby for ironing.
- Ten and up: many can handle the whole process with supervision on the iron first few times.
How to know a child is ready
- They can pick up small objects and place them precisely.
- They understand the bead-stays-out-of-mouth rule and follow it.
- They can sit with a task for ten to fifteen minutes.
- They do not grab for the iron or its cord.
