The short answer: the iron is safe when an adult runs it, and unsafe whenever a child can reach it. The rule is simple: ironing is an adult-only step, the iron lives away from kids, and it is unplugged the moment the last piece is done.
The beads are harmless plastic. The iron melts them, which means it reaches temperatures that can cause serious burns in seconds. Treat it like a hot stove.
The iron safety rules
- Adults only: children never touch or operate the iron, regardless of age until they are clearly ready.
- Ironing station: a fixed spot away from the beading area, so kids are not crowded around it.
- Preheat away from kids: set up and plug in before children come to the table.
- Unplug immediately: the moment ironing is done, unplug and let it cool out of reach.
- Cord control: keep the cord coiled and off the floor where it can be tripped on or pulled.
- Cooling time: the soleplate stays hot for minutes after unplugging. Store it where a child cannot touch it.
How to run ironing sessions with kids
- Children bring finished boards to the adult one at a time.
- The adult irons while kids stand back and watch from a safe distance.
- The piece is handed back only after it has cooled.
