The short answer: work in small piles, not the whole bucket. Separate by color family first, split families into individual colors second, and move each color to its own labeled drawer. Small piles make the job manageable and stop beads from rolling away.
Sorting hundreds of beads sounds like a boring evening, but the right order makes it go fast: rough split first, fine split second, storage third.
Step by step
- Pour out a small pile, about a handful. Keep the bucket lid closed so the rest stays put.
- Split by color family: reds-pinks, blues-greens, yellows-oranges, browns, whites-grays-blacks.
- Use paper cups or small bowls as temporary homes for each family.
- Split each family into individual colors with tweezers or your fingers.
- Move each color into its labeled drawer or bag, then start the next pile.
Tricks that save time
- Sort in a tray: a baking sheet with a lip catches beads that roll.
- Compare against known colors: keep one bead of each color as a reference card.
- Do not chase perfection: near-enough shades can share a drawer.
- Label drawers as you fill them, not at the end.
