The short version: pick a small pattern, place beads on a pegboard with tweezers, cover with ironing paper, iron one side for 10 to 15 seconds, flip, iron the other side, then flatten under a heavy book until cool. Your first piece takes about 20 minutes.
Making perler beads is one of the easiest crafts to learn, and the first project teaches you every skill you need for bigger ones. Here is the full process, from empty pegboard to finished piece.
Step 1: Pick a pattern and gather supplies
Start small: a design under 200 beads fits on one 29 by 29 pegboard. The free pattern library has printable charts with bead counts, and our easy patterns for beginners post is a good place to start. You need beads, a pegboard, tweezers, ironing paper, and an iron.
Step 2: Bead the design
Work left to right, top to bottom, one color at a time or row by row. Keep the pegboard on a flat surface and slide beads onto pegs with a slight wiggle. Fix mistakes as you go, before ironing.
Step 3: Iron both sides
Cover the beads with ironing paper, set the iron to medium-high with no steam, and press in slow circles for 10 to 15 seconds. Let it cool for a minute, peel the paper, flip the piece, re-cover, and iron the back the same way. Details are in our ironing guide.
Step 4: Flatten and finish
Place the warm piece under a heavy book or cutting board and leave it for five minutes. This keeps it flat and closes any weak spots. When it is fully cool, it is ready for keychain rings, magnets, or a frame. Need a custom design? Turn any photo into a pattern with our free pattern generator.
