The short answer: a cross stitch chart is already a bead pattern. Every square on the chart is one bead, and every stitch symbol is a color. Map the thread colors to your bead colors and build. The grid sizes even match.
Cross stitch and perler beads are cousins. Both work on a grid, both count squares, and both use symbols or colors for each square. That is why cross stitch charts convert so cleanly.
The conversion steps
- Find a cross stitch chart with a grid you like.
- Check the chart size against your boards: a 50 by 50 chart needs two boards or one large one.
- Map each thread color to the closest bead color you own.
- Mark your bead color code next to each symbol on the chart.
- Build row by row, counting off as you go.
What converts best
- Small charts: 30 by 30 and under convert with almost no detail lost.
- Geometric designs: flowers, stars, and borders keep their shape perfectly.
- Letter charts: alphabets and monograms work directly.
- Photo-style charts: possible, but the color mapping gets heavy.
- Backstitch details: fine lines do not exist in beads, simplify them or skip them.
