The short answer: a 3D Pokeball is three parts: a red half, a white half, and a center band. Iron each part on one side only, bend them into domes and a ring, then glue the seams. It takes about an hour the first time.
The round shape is the whole challenge. Flat pieces become domes because the un-ironed side stays flexible. Plan the pattern so the red half and white half are equal circles, plus one long rectangle for the band.
Step by step
- Make a red circle, a white circle, and a band about two beads tall and long enough to wrap the circle edges.
- Add the black center line and white button to the band, and the button detail to the top of the red half.
- Iron each piece on one side only, then cool flat.
- Bend the band into a ring first, melt its ends together, and let it set around a small bowl so it holds the curve.
- Bend each circle into a dome by pressing it gently over the bowl.
- Glue the domes inside the band, press, and let the glue dry. Hot glue sets in minutes.
Tips that save a rebuild
- Match the band to the domes: the band must be exactly as tall as the rim of a dome. Test-fit before gluing.
- Do not over-iron: a fully melted circle will crack when bent. One-sided melt only.
- Bend warm, not hot: wait a few seconds after ironing, then shape it while still flexible.
- Glue from inside: apply glue on the inner side of the seams so none shows on the surface.
