The short answer: Minecraft heads are naturally cube-shaped, which makes them the easiest 3D perler project there is. Make six square faces with the pattern on them, iron each on one side only, fold them into a cube, and join the seams.
Every Minecraft mob head follows the same recipe, so once you build one, you can build them all. The face patterns transfer straight from the game’s pixel art.
Building a cube head
- Design six faces of about 10 by 10 beads each. Front gets the face, back is plain, sides carry the pattern details.
- Iron each face on one side only, then cool flat.
- Line up four faces in a row and join their touching edges by ironing through paper.
- Fold the strip into a square ring and melt the two ends together.
- Join the top and bottom faces one edge at a time, using a thin glue line if the seam will not close.
- Square up the corners while the piece is still warm.
Which mob heads to try
- Creeper head: the classic first project, green with a simple face.
- Steve head: adds a chin and hair line, still mostly straight edges.
- Zombie or skeleton: same cube recipe with different colors.
- Gold block: no face at all, the easiest possible cube.
The cube technique is the same one our 3D patterns guide teaches for every build, and pixel grids for these characters are in the pattern library. Beads, boards, and paper are in our shop.
