The short version: iron large projects in sections instead of trying to cover everything at once. Work zone by zone for 15 to 20 seconds each, keep the iron moving, and let the whole piece cool before moving it. Multi-board projects need tape to hold boards together while you iron.
Big pieces fail in two ways: uneven melting because the iron never covers the whole surface, and boards drifting apart before the beads fuse. Both have simple fixes.
Section-by-section method
- Divide the design into zones the size of your iron’s soleplate.
- Iron each zone for 15 to 20 seconds, overlapping the previous zone slightly.
- Keep the iron moving within each zone; do not rest it on one spot.
- Flip with a large cutting board, re-cover, and repeat on the back.
Holding multi-board pieces together
Before ironing, tape the boards together on the underside with masking tape, or use the tape method to transfer the whole design onto one surface. This stops seams from opening mid-melt. Large designs also warp more, so flatten for longer: ten minutes under a flat heavy surface instead of five.
