The short answer: do not put perler beads in the oven. The beads themselves melt around 130 degrees, but an oven heats unevenly, the pegboard will melt and ruin your food oven, and the plastic releases more fumes than an iron ever does. Use an iron, heat press, or hair dryer instead.
Oven-baking beads is a popular idea on some craft videos, and it rarely ends well. Here is what actually happens and why the alternatives are better.
The three problems
- Uneven heat: ovens cycle hot and cool, so some beads over-melt while others stay loose.
- Melted pegboards: the boards are plastic and warp or melt well before beads fuse.
- Fumes and mess: hot polyethylene releases more odor, and any overflow bakes onto the oven walls.
Better options
An iron with parchment gives you full control, a heat press works for large pieces, and a hair dryer fuses small ones. All of them keep the heat where you want it.
