The short answer: you cannot melt projects back into loose beads at home, but you can re-iron them flat, cut them into smaller pieces, or use them as-is. Every old project can still become something.
Melted-down projects are a common wish, but making new beads needs industrial equipment. What does work at home is reshaping and repurposing, which keeps the plastic in use.
What works at home
- Re-iron flat: press old projects between parchment and re-iron to flatten warps and refresh the surface.
- Cut into pieces: scissors cut fused beads cleanly, so a big project becomes coasters, magnets, or pendant shapes.
- Layer into collages: glue cut shapes onto a base board and iron over parchment to fuse a new combined piece.
- Grind into filler: snipped tiny pieces can fill the background of large new designs.
Why full melting fails
Ovens and pans melt beads unevenly, release fumes, and burn the plastic before it flows. The result is a brittle, discolored sheet that cannot be re-beaded. Heating beads to full melt also voids their toy-safety certification.
