The short answer: for flat pieces, thread a split ring through two bead holes near the top. For 3D pieces, glue a jump ring to the back. Ten seconds of work, no special tools.
The trick to a keychain that survives daily use is not the ring, it is the piece itself. A bead piece that is only ironed on one side stays soft and will tear around the hole within a week. Iron both sides well, and the piece outlasts the keychain hardware.
Flat pieces: use the holes
- Pick two bead holes side by side near the top edge of the design.
- Open a split ring by pulling its ends apart, and slide one end through both holes.
- Attach the keychain clip or lanyard to the ring and close it.
- If the holes are sealed from ironing, poke them through with a needle or toothpick before attaching.
3D pieces: glue a loop
Boxes, animals, and other 3D pieces have no convenient holes. Glue a jump ring or a short ribbon loop to the back or top with hot glue or super glue. Let it dry for an hour before hanging anything from it. A dab of glue around the ring after it dries makes the attachment permanent.
