The short answer: yes, for children under three. A 5 mm midi bead is almost exactly the size of a young child’s airway, and beads are easy to inhale or swallow. For children three and up, close supervision and a strict no-mouth rule remove most of the risk.
This is why every Perler package and every kids guide says the same thing: not for children under three, supervision required. The rule exists because real incidents happen, not because of lawyers.
The risk by age
- Under three: highest risk. Beads fit the airway, and toddlers mouth everything. Keep beads out of the house or locked away.
- Three to six: risk drops a lot but does not disappear. Supervise, sort, and count beads every session.
- Seven and up: low risk with normal rules, unless the child has developmental delays or mouthing habits.
- Pets: beads look like food to some dogs and cats. Keep bead trays out of pet reach too.
Simple safety habits
- Store beads in closed containers, out of children’s reach.
- Work on a tray with edges, never directly on the floor.
- Count beads at the start and end of every session.
- Clean up spills immediately and search for stray beads.
- Follow the guidance in our kids safety guide.
