How to Make Pixel Art Perler Bead Patterns

The short answer: pixel art and perler beads are the same medium: every pixel is one bead. Find a sprite or emoji you like, copy it onto a grid, and build. No conversion tool is even needed for most designs.

This is why perler projects look so good with game characters: the source art was designed on the same grid you are beading on.

Where to find pixel art

  • Game sprites: classic games use small grids that translate directly to beads.
  • Emoji: open any emoji keyboard and screenshot the one you want.
  • Pixel art sites: collections of free sprites and icons, usually with grid sizes noted.
  • Our library: the pattern library has hundreds of pixel-style grids already converted.
  • AI generator: describe the character and get a pixel grid at ai-pattern-generator.

How to adapt any pixel image

  1. Open the image in any image editor and zoom in until the pixels are visible as squares.
  2. Count the grid: most sprites are 8 by 8, 16 by 16, or 32 by 32.
  3. Copy the pixels onto graph paper or our pattern maker, one square per pixel.
  4. Swap colors that you do not own for the closest bead color you have.
  5. Multiply the grid if you want it bigger: draw each pixel as a 2 by 2 block.

Pixel art is the fastest route to a pattern that looks professional, because someone already solved the design. Our pattern maker handles counting, and ready grids are in the pattern library.
