The short answer: yes. An iron is the standard tool for fusing beads, and a basic one costs little. Small projects can work with a hair straightener, but the iron gives even heat across the whole piece, which is what makes the difference.
The beads melt because of heat and pressure. Any tool that provides both can fuse them, which is why alternatives exist. The question is whether the alternative fuses evenly enough.
Alternatives that work
- Hair straightener: fine for tiny pieces that fit between the plates. Iron through parchment paper in short presses.
- Heat press (Cricut): works for medium pieces if the temperature is low and time is short. Risky for beginners.
- Hairdryer: rarely hot enough and blows beads around. Not recommended.
- Oven or microwave: dangerous and easy to melt the board. Never use them.
Just get an iron
