The short answer: start with simple side-view silhouettes, one pegboard or less. Cats, owls, and turtles are the easiest; portraits and 3D animals come later. Small pieces use under 200 beads.
Animals are the most popular subject in beading after hearts and characters. A simple silhouette reads clearly at small sizes, so you do not need detail to make a design that people recognize.
Easy starter animals
- Cat head: a square head, triangle ears, and eyes. Five minutes to design.
- Owl: a round body, two big eyes, and a small beak. Reads instantly.
- Turtle: a dome shell over a small head and feet. Great for younger kids.
- Fish: a simple oval with a tail fin and a dot eye.
Build tips
- Use one or two colors for the body and one accent color for details.
- Make eyes two beads side by side so they read from across the room.
- Iron both sides fully so thin legs and ears do not bend.
- Cool flat under a book, then trim any melted edges with scissors.
