The short answer: you can fuse perler beads with a heat press (best), a hair dryer on high (small pieces), or a hot-water bath (messy but works). All reach the 130 degrees polyethylene needs. An iron is still the most controllable, but these work in a pinch.
Fusing is about reaching the melting point with enough pressure to weld the beads. Here is how each no-iron method performs, ranked from best to messiest.
Ranked alternatives
- Heat press: closest to an iron, even heat and pressure, 150 degrees for 15 to 20 seconds.
- Hair dryer: hold close on high, keep moving, press beads through paper with a spoon. Slow, for small pieces only.
- Hot water: sandwich beads between paper and dip briefly in just-boiled water, then press flat. Works but messy and hard to control.
Tips for any method
Always keep a paper barrier between the heat source and the beads, work on a heat-safe surface, and test five beads first.
